3 New GPL-Licensed, Multi-threaded Scripts

ImageI've recently written three BASH scripts, each of which are licensed under version 3 of the GNU Public License. In each case, there are already plenty of scripts out there that do more or less the same thing. What makes these stand out is that rather than simply running a single, linear 'for' loop, they will potentially utilize as many CPU cores as you can throw at them. They also have a few other touches like sanity checks and plenty of user tunables, but the multi-core friendly design is by far the most compelling feature of each.

  • backatronic.sh – Easily backup relevant files and databases in a 7-day rotation.
  • flac-distiller.sh – A multithreaded FLAC to MP3 wrapper for Linux & UNIX.
  • mp3-o-matic.sh – A multithreaded WAV to MP3 wrapper for Linux & UNIX.
Each of these scripts is hosted on the tuxhelp.org wiki, so feel free to head over, create an account and post your own improvements or – better yet – your own useful scripts.

TuxHelp.org Launched

ImageI've launched a new Linux self-help site, TuxHelp.org. You might be saying to yourself, "there are already too many of those things out there, why add another?" Well, the answer is relatively simple. Every time I solve an issue or help somebody with a situation I'd taken for granted, I kicked myself for not writing it down. Now I'm making a point of throwing up a wiki page for each issue on TuxHelp.org. If enough people do this, we'll have a respectable, searchable resource of useful (and often obscure) data that can help new Linux users and experienced pros alike. Don't forget that useful tidbit, throw it on TuxHelp.org instead!

First Page Loads Slowly in Mambo

ImageEver been annoyed by a Mambo site that loads unreasonably slowly on the first hit, then subsequent page loads are an order of magnitude faster? Unfortunately I have too, and on more than one occasion. When this cropped up for me yet again, I was reminded of the apparent lack of good information on this subject. With that in mind, I decided to sit down and write the following article on how to solve it. If you're with me so far, read on.
